You have an idea and would like to turn this into a tangible product. Before you seek professional assistance, you first make some sketches and start cutting and gluing. By pottering about with pieces of cardboard, glue and a Stanley knife you gradually find out what the actual product should look like. Then you contact a company experienced in making professional prototypes and you discuss your idea.
There are 3 main reasons for making a prototype. A visual prototype is intended to showcase the overall shape and dimensions of the product. A proof-of-concept prototype is designed to demonstrate the core functionality of the product. A presentation prototype is a working representation of how the end invention looks and works. This is useful e.g. if you want to present your invention at a fair.
Phases and techniques
You can’t make a prototype straight from an idea, you need a concept first. Depending on the actual product and the budget, the technique will be decided. For instance, if you choose for a 3D printed prototype, the 3D file will need to be converted to a .stl file. The .stl file drives the 3D printer. For a prototype manufactured through milling or turning, a 3D file will suffice to drive the lathe and turning machine. After the various parts have been manufactured, the prototype will be assembled.
